I am the owner of Alternative Choice Counseling Center. I have spent over 30 years in the field of Counseling and Criminal Justice work. I wanted to fill in the gaps that I saw over these years  and provide a place that offers evening and weekend treatment in a  family like atmosphere. Our philosophy and mission is to meet our clients where they are and provide guidance for them as they choose their path to wellness. We strive to make each client feel their importance and show compassion and support for them on their journey. We look forward to  being a part of your journey.

Program Director

My name is Tonya Beard and I’m the Program Director at Alternative Choice Counseling Center. I currently live in Milan, TN with my husband- Brandon, who is in the military, and with our beautiful children; Shelby, Payton, Katelyn, and Paisleigh.  I first started at Alternative Choice Counseling in March 2015 as a client. ACC, my counselor, my family, and the Gibson County Recovery Court saved my life. I learned so much about my disease and learned tools to help me maintain it. Everyone at ACC was so nice and helpful whenever I needed them or had a question they were always there. When I completed my treatment, I wanted nothing more than to be a part of Alternative Choice Counseling and give back what was given to me. I absolutely love my job. Seeing our clients turning their lives around and meeting goals that before they never thought were possible is so rewarding.

Daniel Fowler.jpg

Therapist: PhD, ACAC, IAMFC, ACES

My name is Daniel Fowler and I am one of the therapists here at Alternative Choice Counseling LLC. When asked to describe my approach, or what you can expect, while working with me, I am holistic and person-centered. What that means, is I will never treat you, your loved one, or someone you know as a chart, a case number, a file, a label, or a diagnosis because that is not who you or they truly are nor is it fair. I take the time to get to know the whole you, from medical, to social, to the environment, to mental health, to addiction, then we together, develop a unique treatment plan that is based on you and you alone. It will not be like anyone else, because no one else is like you.
My theoretical model is trauma-focused- cognitive behavioral therapy or TF-CBT. While this is my core, and I use it primarily finding it beneficial for trauma, thoughts, feelings, emotions, and so much more, I also have extensive training in multiple other areas. Some of those would include, but not be limited to, Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE’s), Play Therapy, Addiction, Family Therapy, Couples Therapy, Marriage Therapy, Child(ren) Therapy, IDD and Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Mood Disorder, Testing and Assessments, and Diagnostics. To follow are some of the national and international recognitions I hope to be able to serve you better with.

Therapist: Master's Degree/Counseling

I am Debbie Porter and I am a Therapist here at ACCC. I have an Undergraduate  Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Counseling. It was clear to me at a young age I would go into a helping profession but I had no idea what field. I feel going into the Mental Health field was more a calling than a choice.  I am a compassionate advocate for the rights of women, children, minorities, and anyone who has been victimized in any way. I have a passion for service and a desire to assist clients in overcoming both short and long-term mental and emotional issues. I am very grateful to Mrs. Lori for giving me the opportunity to work in a field that feels more like my second skin than an occupation. While working here I am receiving supervision hours in order to apply for my LPC licensure and my Master’s in Addiction Counseling licensure. I love my job here and am thankful every day I get to work with other people in recovery like myself.

Amanda Hays.jpg

Professional Counselor

My name is Amanda Hayes and I hold a temporary TN licensure as a Professional Counselor (Mental Health Service Provider) with full licensure expected by December 2021. I am also pursuing licensure as an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. I graduated with a MA in Counseling from Trevecca Nazarene University in 2009. In addition to 8 years of experience in child welfare, my clinical experience includes working with adolescents in residential settings, crisis response and assessment of children, adolescents, and adults in the community and inpatient mental health settings, and outpatient treatment with individuals focusing on mental health and substance use needs. I have a passion for working with individuals to understand where they are and help them navigate where they would like to go in life using a Cognitive Behavioral framework. I believe the client is the expert on themselves and the therapist’s role is to walk with them as they go through the transformations they desire.

Fiscal Director

I have lived by the motto that every decision you make creates a pattern for the person you are to become. Being able to work at this center has been one of the best decisions of my life. It’s caused me to be thankful for each and every day that I have and created a want for me to better myself. I enjoy working here and being able to interact with the clients and my fellow coworkers. I think this center has provided a wonderful atmosphere and bestowed upon not only the staff but the clients a sense of responsibility. I’m thankful to be learning and enjoying my work, and very much love seeing the progress of our clients.

I started working at Alternative Choice Counseling Center on March 26, 2019.  I was a stay-at-home wife and mother for about 18 years.  I was ready to get back to work, be productive and make a difference in my life and the lives of others.  I love clerical work, so when I saw this job become available, I jumped out of my comfort zone and applied.  And I am so glad that Mrs. Lori gave me a chance and hired me.  I love my job and all the wonderful people I meet.  To see clients come in on drugs or alcohol or even just having mental health issues, and then to watch how their lives change over the course of their treatment, is truly awe-inspiring and amazing.  If all I can do is give them a smile or a kind word of encouragement, it makes me feel like I had a hand in helping them turn their lives around.
